Back in the 1980s, a new phrase was coined – “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” A decade later, a young man in New Zealand was inspired to start Random Acts of Kindness Day, emphasizing the question – what would happen if we all spread a little more kindness and beauty wherever we go? Celebrated on February 17th by a growing number of individuals and organizations, random acts have taken on a life of their own. While people find ways to incorporate them into everyday life, there is definitely something special about joining with millions of others to flood our world with kindness simultaneously. At Griffin’s Floral Designs, we want to encourage you to spread the cheer and add to the beauty of the world around you. We’ll even help with the flowers!
Desmond Tutu once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” We can become the good we want to see in the world by doing small things that make a big difference.
For example, you can pick up litter as you walk your neighborhood, offer to help someone with their groceries, or give up that prime parking spot to someone else. Pay for someone else’s gas while at the pump, pay for the person behind you at a drive-thru, or buy a coffee for the crossing guard out in the cold.
Often the opportunities for small acts of kindness are right in front of us- we just have to watch for them.
Some people are a little more intentional, perhaps cooking a meal for a lonely friend (and staying to share it with them!) or writing a kind note to someone who could use encouragement.
