When you are celebrating a loved one’s birthday, many things may inspire your choice of the perfect gift. Whether a special memory or something about their personality, sending a token of your affection can be a very meaningful exercise. In September, the honor falls to the sapphire and the aster. 

Why the Aster? The aster is a daisy-like flower that is also related to the sunflower. In late summer and early fall, when many flowers are ending their season, the aster begins to bloom. This fact alone makes it the perfect choice for September birthdays. The name “aster” is from the Greek for “star”, and the flower was so named because of its composition. There is a central disk made up of approximately 300 miniature flowers, and that center is surrounded by ray petals which are arranged in a star shape. Asters can be many colors, yet are easily recognizable from other similar species  – the central disk of aster is always yellow.

Sapphire Blue Flowers: The brilliant sapphire is one of the most cherished gemstones in the world. Like the aster, it has a starry connotation – in fact, its name means “celestial”. Long considered a stone for royalty, it was also deemed by ancient cultures to have divine origins. Sapphires also come in many colors, including shades of green and orange, but it is the vivid, iconic blue which is most valuable and beloved. When creating September birthday bouquets, blue flowers are a wonderful – and rare – choice.

There are not many flowers which occur naturally in shades of true blue. You may choose to incorporate blue delphinium, blue hydrangea, forget-me-nots, blue hyacinth, or blue iris.
