National Puppy Day Advocates Raise Awareness

National Puppy Day

National Puppy Day was established in 2007 by animal advocate Colleen Paige. It strives to encourage prospective pet parents to visit their local Columbus area shelter when looking to adopt a new furry family member, in order to give them the happy and safe life every animal deserves. Each time a puppy is rescued from a shelter or taken out of a neglectful or abusive situation, these dedicated volunteers and professionals have a reason to celebrate. There is an overwhelming canine overpopulation issue in the United States, with nearly 4 million dogs surrendered to shelters annually. Puppies usually arrive at the shelter as part of an abandoned litter, and although young puppies have a better opportunity to be adopted than more mature dogs, they are still competing for adoption with puppy mills and for-profit breeders. In fact, only 26% of puppies who find homes were acquired from a shelter. National Puppy Day

A rescue mom shares about her favorite rescue dog, and about the rescue experience.

““He has been a really great addition to our family. I know they love me, and that is a wonderful feeling. I know they are thankful to us for giving them a second chance and a wonderful home life. I do think adopting from a shelter is the best idea. There are so many wonderful facilities filled with lovable dogs (and cats) that need a forever home – even fostering is helpful to the cause. “National Puppy Day

You may think that dogs abandoned to a shelter may not have the best temperament, but in fact, most people who adopt rescue dogs will tell a different story. Shelter dogs are often very well socialized, meaning that they should do well with children and other animals.

Be Prepared: People who work rehoming shelter dogs are passionate about making the right connection between dog and family. They are familiar with the dog’s personality and will only give you a pet right for your living situation.
